Duke Women's Mentoring Network

Advertising

The advertising committee is responsible for raising awareness about the Network around Duke. Since the Women’s Mentoring Network is a new group, it is important that we spread the word about WMN and its events. The committee places fliers around campus, draws chalk designs on the plaza, and brainstorms ways to get the word out about WMN.

Advertising usually meets every Tuesday at 10:00 P.M. If you would like to join, you just show up at the meeting or email Katrina.kurnit@duke.edu or pdp@duke.edu. Please email if you have any amazing advertising ideas as well!

Dorm Discussions

The Dorm Discussion committee is responsible for planning, coordinating and supervising each Dorm Discussion that takes place in freshman dormitories on East Campus. Members of the committee create discussion topics, provide food and music and fun activities for the discussion, contact dorm RA's and reserve space, and handle all other logistical details. During each discussion, committee members are in charge of leading conversations and are responsible for engaging freshman girls in fun and interesting topics and helping to answer questions and give the best advice they can on whatever questions or concerns are raised.

The Dorm Discussion committee formally meets once every two weeks, typically in the Alumni Lounge on West Campus. Committee chairs are constantly in e-mail correspondence with freshman dorm RA's and committee members throughout thee week. Meetings are informal discussions where members brainstorm ideas for future dorm discussion and discuss what worked and what didn't work in previous ones. In short, members of the dorm discussion committee are in charge of planning and interacting with freshman women and serving as mentors in the most informal and direct way by taking charge and talking with them one on one and hanging out! Faculty Dinners

The Faculty Dinner Committee functions to facilitate student-professor interaction. We meet once a month and organize a series of eight to ten faculty dinners throughout the semester. Dinner groups are primarily based on area of study/major, though of course any student is welcome to attend whichever dinner they choose. This program is very open, and any student should feel free to submit the name and a short bio of a faculty member with whom they would like to have dinner. Once the committee has reviewed this information, the student is encouraged to invite their mentor to an informal dinner at a local venue. At this point, all undergraduate women have a chance to RSVP to attend the dinner, which will be capped at ten undergraduate students. The hope is that all the students will leave their dinner having forged a new and valuable relationship with a member of the Duke faculty, as well as armed with numerous tips and tricks on how to succeed in a multitude of different areas. Contact Melissa.schneiderman@duke.edu or ml38@duke.edu for faculty suggestions!

Social Enrichment

The Social Enrichment Committee meets weekly to discuss upcoming social events. Our major goals and objectives are to promote the Women's Mentoring Network through social events and to promote interactions and fellowship between Women's Mentoring Network members and other women on campus, primarily freshmen women!

The committee’s first event was a Cupcake Study Break on in the Marketplace. It was a well attended event by both freshmen and upperclasswomen members of the Women's Mentoring Network. We enjoyed cupcakes from Victoria's Sweets and homemade hot chocolate while spending a fun hour together and providing information about the organization. We hope to make this an annual event!

We look forward to seeing you at our events! Email Kathryn.alberts@duke.edu or sarah.steele@duke.edu if you are interested in joining our committee!
